If you know me, you know my love for Harry Potter. The news of downtown Ithaca transforming into Diagon Alley was posted three times in a matter of six hours on my Facebook wall by dear friends. My first reaction was excitement, and then there was the possibility of working on Halloween hit, and it hit hard. I was heartbroken, but something in the universe went right, and I was able to attend the Wizarding Weekend. Eeeeeeeek!
We arrived a little before 1:00 pm and the event was already off to a good start. The downtown community did a fantastic job of transforming alleys, shops, and streets for us potter heads. There were all sorts of magical activities; wizarding duels, quidditch, Horcrux hunt (our favorite), and giving poor muggles a chance at magic.
After picking up our Marauder’s map, Katy and I took off to find some butterbeer. Once our craving was satisfied, it was time to hunt down Horcruxes and destroy Voldemort once and for all! It was harder than we anticipated. Each location had this dangerous trap– shopping! We did our best to make it out of each place without any damage to our wallets.
Our wallets were bruised a bit, but in the end, we held our own and destroyed Voldie! 10000 points for Gryffindor! We were famished; it was lunch-time! We decided to hit up Star Truck for obvious reasons. After our delicious meal, it was time to walk around some more and mingle with our people – meaning takes photographs of everyone and everything because I couldn’t help myself.
We decided to go to the Muggle pub for a well-deserved Muggle beer. It was no Butterbeer, but it was enough to warm our magical souls. After grabbing some well-deserved Ales, we wandered around downtown before heading out.
What a treat for everyone; especially those of us who grew up with Harry Potter. According to Wizarding Weekend‘s official Facebook page, an estimated 8000+ people attended. Katy and I were on a time constraint, so we hopped in our enchanted car and left the festivities around 3:30 pm. I hope Ithaca turns this into an annual event! I will attend year after year.
